Erhjen River Water Pollution Remediation Assessment Project

Absrtact
The main purpose of the project, implemented from May 2008 to April 2009, was to assist the EPA's continued compilation and analysis of multi-year water pollution remediation work and the effectiveness of remediation measures along the Erhjen River. The project further involved performing an ecological survey and assessment of the downstream section of the Erhjen River (from the Ertsenghang Bridge to the river's mouth), and submitting biomarker and ecological effectiveness analysis reports. Throughout 2008, the project assisted the completion of ecological survey and assessment work along the downstream section of the Erhjen River, collected the 2001-2008 ecological survey results of the various agencies involved, determined quantitative and qualitative annual changes, and performed analysis. This project also compiled river remediation work and environmental construction projects connected with the Erhjen River, and assessed the improvement to water quality and submitted remediation recommendations based on water quality/quantity monitoring results and water quality improvement project tests conducted at 24 points (times). In addition, the project also conducted 16 on-site surveys, consultative conferences, and project demonstration sessions, and further performed four restoration vision ordination meetings to track each unit's commitments and review work attainment during the year. Thanks to implementation assistance from this project and the dedicated efforts of all units over the years, the length of the Erhjen River affected by severe pollution has improved from 47.4% in 2006 to 21.9% in 2008. With regard to ecological conditions, organisms including fish, bottom-dwelling invertebrates, crustaceans, and mollusks are displaying increased diversity compared with the results of the 2002 survey, indicative of a gradual improvement in the aquatic environment. Relying on the implementation of relevant projects, and drawing on the participation and assistance of the private sector, continued water quality improvement measures and future environmental construction will attain the Executive Yuan's vision of "no anoxia, no odor, and a revitalized waterside."
